3 Reasons to Take Heart-Healthy Walks

The physical benefits of walking are nearly endless. It can be an easy stroll or a heart-thumping hike up hills. Walking can help you get in shape, improve mental health, and even reduce chances of disease. Here are my top three reasons why you should go take a walk.

  1. Walking can help you lose weight. I’m not talking about physical pounds, though. I’m talking about the weight you drop as you talk with a friend. Hiking is one of my favorite ways to spend time with my friends. One friend in particular and I often use our hikes to vent to each other or work out a problem. Because I trust my friend’s judgement and her understanding of the Bible, I know she will give me good advice. In the same way, she wants to hear what I say about her problems. We don’t always agree, but at least we air whatever is bothering us and feel heard. By the end of the hike, we definitely get our exercise in, but more importantly we leave emotional weight behind with every mile marker we pass.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

  2. Walking is a great way to enjoy nature. As a lifelong Wisconsinite, I know there are lots of times that the weather does not seem to invite a person outside (like November through April or sometimes October through May). However, from a young age I learned the value of sturdy snow boots, waterproof gloves, a good hat, and hot cocoa.

I’ve had the opportunity to walk through the same segment of the Ice Age Trail in nearly all kinds of weather. It’s amazing to see the seasonal changes: from the first tender shoots emerging from the dark, dead underbrush to every shade of summer green imaginable; from the perfect mix of Autumnal colors to the untouched, crisp white of a new snowfall. Armed with my nature guidebook, I nerd out on wildflowers and make my hiking companions stop when I find a new plant. Thanks to the artistry of our Divine Creator, there is variety and beauty all around us.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19:1

  3. Walking is always more than just a walk. When we walk with our children, my husband and I will often share a look over their heads. You might know this look - it says, “Can you believe they’re ours?” Sometimes it’s because they are so adorable, discovering new and delightful bits of nature. Sometimes it’s because they are skipping along telling a mile-a-minute, elaborate story about a dragon named Lighting Butter. Some of the best conversations I’ve had with my children happen while we’re on a walk after dinner.

Maybe you long for the solitude and need some “me time” with a gentle pace. Go ahead and spend time in prayer as you walk. You might surprise yourself by how many people you can think of to pray for while you walk one mile. I know I do!

Walking gives us a chance to reconnect and rejuvenate relationships – with each other, with nature, and with God.

[But] those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

So what are you waiting for? Lace up some sturdy shoes and hit the road. If you’re feeling more adventurous*, grab a backpack, water, maybe a snack and guidebook. Learn how to read a trail map and maybe some basic first aid. You will be glad you went. I know my heart always feels healthier with every step.

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. Psalm 37:23-24
