My Prayer Rock

The other day I had to stick a post-it note on my oven. The post-it note read, "CLEAN BEFORE USING AGAIN!" My oven had gotten beyond dirty and needed more than a quick wipe with a rag to get clean. Instead of setting off the smoke alarm, yet again, terrifying my two year old into a screaming frenzy, I decided a quick love note (or rather a honey-do note) to myself was in order for it to actually get clean. So basically, I forget everything.

This isn't news to me. I've talked about this before. I've come to the realization that post-it notes, cell phone alarms, texts to my husband to remember this or that are the only way things get accomplished in my house. Gone are the days of remembering phone numbers, appointments, and special occasions. I usually don't even remember what I walked into the next room for!

Unfortunately, this carries over into my prayer life. I try to blame it on my mommy brain. I'm thinking and doing about 137 things at the same time. I've resorted to sticking post-it notes on major appliances that stare directly at me ALL DAY to remind myself to clean them. But really, I just need to refocus and slow down a little. That's not always possible as a mom. Or really, as any human these days, so I enlisted the help of some garbanzo beans and a fabric square to give me a little konk! on the head. Literally.

I present to you, my prayer rock! Okay, you're right. I said beans. The snow had not yet melted when I made this guy, so I used beans. I made one of these when I was a young girl in our Girls Fun Group at church. Basically, you set the prayer rock on your pillow. At night, when you lay your head down to sleep... bonk... a gentle reminder to pray! Toss that sucker on the floor to stab you in the foot in the morning when you wake up to again, gently remind you to pray.

All you need for this funny little craft is a fabric square (mine is about 8 inches by 8 inches), a rock, or beans, or pile of legos you are tired of stepping on, and some ribbon. I put my beans in a plastic bag just in case little hands got a hold of it so I wouldn't have a bean disaster on my floor. Do I need to explain this? I think you can figure it out. :)

Now I can be gently bonked into prayer at night and in the morning. I also like that a quick glance when passing through the room reminds me again. Pray continually.
